June 30 Tax Deadline is Looming for Non-Residents

An important deadline is approaching for non-residents with certain Canadian-source income. June 30 is the deadline to file elected returns under Section 216 (pertaining to rental income) and Section 217 (pertaining to Canadian source pension income). There may be significant consequences for missing this deadline as returns received after this date, generally aren’t accepted. Here’s what you need to know:

The CRA receives a “D” mark!  According to a new report by CFIB, the quality of the information and phone support the CRA is extending to Canadian business owners has worsened, despite the agency’s goals to increase service standards. Tax changes to employee stock options were supposed to come into effect on January 1, 2020, and thanks to feedback collected from Canadian businesses in a consultation that ended in September, the implementation of these measures has now been delayed.
