The “new Canada Groceries and Essential Benefit” isn’t new it is simply a renamed and increase GST/HST benefit. Our current government seems to think no one will notice and that they can buy more votes with the renamed give away. The fact that our government already spends more that they take in means that they are borrowing this money that they are giving away. Since they cannot repay their current debts this will stay on the books gathering interest for years to come. There is a old axiom in the retail system that states “if you bought it a truck brought it”. If they really wanted to help make groceries more affordable a place to start could be to lower the the fuel tax especially on diesel. I know this simple solution sounds like a no brainer but I think it is possible that the no brainers are running the system.

When I started working for the federal government in 2000, I was told it cost over $100 for the federal government to cut a cheque, which makes some sense when you see all the hands any process goes through. This was at a time when $35 quarterly GST rebates weren’t uncommon. From a taxpayer’s perspective, it would make a lot more sense to increase the basic personal exemption and eliminate this sort of quarterly payment and dismantle the bureaucracy it takes to process it.
I have three adult children and they each get different amounts.
If we had a more affordable government, we could do a lot of rationalization of taxation in the first place, which would do more to help lower income folks.
Sigh.

It is positive that something is happening especially for those with lower incomes. However it does not address the bigger problem that Canadians do not earn enough to be able to adjust to inflationary costs.

Wile I am all in for helping those that need assistance, assistance must be target to those who truly need greater assistance, like those with disabilities, etc.
Just giving money to the general population, can be see as attempting to obtain the votes of those using our money Joe Truscott CPA

New Trend a) work to earn up to $15,000 - No Income tax b) for the remaining work for cash - no tax, - also do not loose the benefit. c) employer too is happy in getting cheap labour d) High Grocery benefit, high Trillium benefit, high child tax benefit Govt. should take some initiative to break this trend

The majority of my tax clients don’t receive it mainly because of their income bracket. No matter they still have to pay the bills and groceries etc.
