CRA: Plan for Efficiencies Include Decreasing Auditors

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) may be stymied by the billions in unreported income flourishing in the underground economy, yet over 3000 full time staff members will soon be cut, according to information obtained by Postmedia News under access to information legislation.

According to the report, CRA is seriously contemplating scaling down their auditors. A letter from Andrew Treusch, the commissioner and chief executive of the CRA, to CRA Minister Findlay, was also discovered by Postmedia. The letter, labeled “secret”, revealed the projected effect on the CRA of the federal government budget cuts. According to the letter, spending cuts from the 2012 and 2013 budgets mean the CRA must cut approximately $313-million annually. That means that more than 3,100 full-time positions must be cut at the agency by 2017-18.

Should CRA reduce their number of tax auditors? That’s our poll question for January. Let us know what you think.
