Students gain skills that can be applied immediately in practice, improving technical accuracy while enhancing client conversations around tax efficiency and wealth preservation.

Students have up to three months to complete each course (approximately 30–40 hours each), though many graduate sooner depending on their schedules.

Course 1: Introduction to Personal Income Tax

Develop the foundational skills required to prepare 2025 personal tax returns and plan for the 2026 tax year, for a variety of taxpayer profiles, including employees, families with children, investors, seniors, and low-income filers. Using student versions of professional tax software, participants practice planning scenarios that reflect current savings strategies such as RRSP, FHSA, and TFSA optimization.

“An open book approach is great for learning. It helped me to go back and review the materials over again so that I could get the right answers on the quiz but it also provided a good understanding of all the material. I think this course has been very helpful and will enable me to start my first year of T1s with my company in a much more effective way.” — Bryce W., Alberta

Course 2: Professional Income Tax Filing – Advanced

Go deeper into deductions, credits, and advanced tax calculations relevant to modern investors and complex returns. Updated content reflects current considerations around capital gains, registered and non-registered investment income, and planning strategies designed to minimize tax exposure while remaining compliant.

“I loved the course setup. I could work at my own pace and I could print off the assignments. This course, unlike other courses, did not treat me like a child by expecting an assignment each week. This course just gave me a deadline for completion and allowed me to work as quickly or as slowly as I deemed necessary.” — Robert J. S., Manitoba

Course 3: Filing Proprietorship Returns

Expand your ability to serve entrepreneurs and small business clients by learning to prepare returns for unincorporated businesses under current reporting expectations. Topics include GST/HST, expense tracking, capital cost allowance, inventory, hiring strategies, and specialized considerations for farmers, fishers, partnerships, and professionals — all aligned with today’s compliance environment.

“This course includes a tremendous amount of useful information… My objective was to learn how to prepare tax returns for small proprietorships, in order to expand my practice. In addition, I do bookkeeping for small businesses and was keen on gaining a better understanding of tax requirements, so that I could be a better bookkeeper. I have acquired a wealth of knowledge and feel a lot more confident about the services I am offering to my clients.” — Sylvie G., YT

Course 4: Filing Final Returns at Death

As intergenerational wealth transfer accelerates, expertise in final returns has become essential. Learn how income is taxed at death, including capital gains considerations, reporting for registered accounts, and strategies to minimize taxes payable while navigating estate administration and probate challenges.

“Everything so far has had value to it. These studies have added to my knowledge and skills and I have put this knowledge to use immediately for our clients or I gained new skills which has given me the opportunity to expand our services.” — W. Samplonius, ON

Course 5: Filing T3 Returns

Trust taxation continues to evolve rapidly, making current education critical. This course introduces different trust structures in Canada and provides practical training on preparing T3 returns, slips, and summaries. Case studies reflect modern planning strategies, helping advisors determine when income should remain in the trust or flow to beneficiaries to optimize tax outcomes.

Course 6: Retirement Income Planning

You will learn a process for helping your clients envision their plan for the three stages of retirement based on a holistic, values-based strategy, types of investments can be offered in a group investment plan, different employer sponsored plans, as well as how employees can maximize their options with these accumulations when leaving a job, strategies required to build a pension income for your clients from various sources of income, and tax efficiency on retirement income layering.

“It is important that we are proactive in terms of planning our clients’ affairs. Knowledge Bureau continues to provide me with relevant knowledge and strategies to help my clients navigate through the complex world of finance, life and taxation.” — George D., ON
